RRI Tools – a toolkit for responsible research and innovation

Responsible research and innovation (RRI) was a key concept in the EU’s research framework programme Horizon 2020. In short, RRI means that research and innovation should be conducted in a responsible manner, taking into account society’s needs and concerns.

Members of the RRI Tools’ consortium at the project kick-off in Brussels in January 2014.

The aim of the EU project RRI Tools was to promote responsible research and innovation with, and for society, and to develop tools to advocate, train, disseminate and implement RRI.  The toolkit can be used by a wide range of stakeholders, such as researchers, civil society, industry, educational organisations and policy makers. RRI Tools was a three-year project funded by the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and ran from 2014-2016.

The project consisted of three main stages:

  1. collection of stakeholders’ opinions and needs as well as existing good RRI practice
  2. compilation and development of a common EU toolkit and;
  3. training on how to use the toolkit and dissemination and advocacy of RRI.

Nineteen RRI national “hubs” were been created to provide coverage to 30 countries in the European Research Area. The composition of the hubs varies from country to country, but typically consisted of a national coordinator and other members, representing for example, research, industry, civil society, educational organisations and policy makers.

In Sweden, VA (Public & Science) was the national coordinator of the Swedish hub. As part of the Swedish contribution to the project, we have run workshops to identify national good practice in RRI and gather the views of stakeholders on their needs and constraints regarding practicing RRI. In 2016, VA organised further workshops and delivered training in how to use the European RRI tools, as well as spread the concept of RRI more widely to relevant parties.
