COALESCE – European Competence Centre for Science Communication

The COALESCE project aims to develop a sustainable European Competence Centre for Science Communication and an associated SciComm Academy by gathering, consolidating, developing and using knowledge, resources and tools supporting quality science communication. It will operate via a virtual platform and connect a network of national and regional hubs, with Public & Science Sweden as the Swedish hub.

The project wants to ensure the effectiveness of and best practices for science communication and demonstrate the means for rapid mobilization of science communication in times of crisis whilst fighting misinformation and engendering trust in science.

The COALESCE project is funded by the European Commission and has initial funding for four years, from April 2023 to March 2027.

National and Regional Hubs

COALESCE National and Regional Hubs are organisations across Europe with excellent
reputations in science communication. They play a crucial role within COALESCE:

  • Co-create tools and resources; adapt resources for local actors and translate COALESCE materials into national and regional languages;
  • Establish local communities of practice;
  • Raise awareness of resources and services from the Competence Centre and in future, provide training opportunities through the Science Communication Academy as well as publicising and
    promoting COALESCE events.

Besides all consortium partners, other National and Regional Hubs are:

  • CRA – Center for Research and Analysis (Bulgaria)
  • TRACES (France)
  • SciCompt (Portugal)
  • Hiša eksperimentov (Slovenia)
  • Koç University (Turkey)
  • Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University (Czech Republic)
  • Labs of Latvia (Latvia)
  • Office of the Ombudsperson for Academic Ethics and Procedures of the Republic of Lithuania (Lithuania)
  • Vetenskap & Allmänhet (Sweden)
  • Wissenschaft im Dialog (Germany)

New hubs will be established throughout the project, following annual periods for expressions of interest from selected countries.

Public & Science Sweden’s participation will be linked to our work to establish a Swedish resource centre for courses in science communication.
