VA (Public & Science) has been awarded the Swedish Unesco Award 2022 for making important contributions to open science, both nationally and internationally.
“Unesco works to promote solidarity in science between people and countries, a mission that today is more important than ever. With the award, the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO wants to express its great appreciation for the invaluable contribution that VA (Public & Science) makes in the spirit of UNESCO, and in line with its vision: ‘research accessible to all”, said Lena Sommestad, Chair of the Swedish UNESCO Council.
The citation for the award emphasises the broad reach of the association’s projects and activities across Sweden and the huge engagement they create. In addition, VA has made important contributions to open science, both nationally and internationally. Not least, the association has played an important role in helping to develop and disseminate information about UNESCO’s new, global recommendations on open science.
VA is commended for outstanding efforts in UNESCO’s main programme areas of education, science, culture and communication.
“We are very honoured and delighted to be awarded this recognition! The world needs open science to be able to take on the huge challenges we face and make sound choices for the future. Research also becomes better and more useful when researchers engage together with the outside world in dialogue. The Swedish Unesco Award is an important source of encouragement in our work to promote this,” commented Cissi Askwall, Secretary General of VA.
The purpose of the Swedish Unesco Award is to highlight an individual or organisation that has made an outstanding contribution within UNESCO’s programme areas of education, science, culture and communication. The award will be awarded during Almedalen Week at the Arena for Research and Democracy in Visby on Monday 4 July at 17.00 –18.00. The award will be presented by Anna-Karin S Johansson, Secretary General of the Swedish National Commission for UNESCO.
