Training researchers to meet school pupils: Projects, concepts and methods for empowerment
Discover and discuss innovative training methods for researchers to inspire the next generation of scientists.
Effective outreach is not just about inspiring future scientists; it’s also about presenting diverse role models, actively listening to audiences’ concerns, needs and opinions, and tackling science scepticism. These contexts are crucial opportunities to overcome the stereotypes that often surround the figure of the scientist, to foster the feeling of science as something relevant and suitable for everyone, and to establish a meaningful, two-way dialogue with the younger generations.
This session proposal addresses the critical need for comprehensive training methods tailored to researchers engaged in activities outside and inside school settings, and presents very concrete examples. We will focus on different innovative and engaging training approaches to equip researchers with the skills, knowledge, and tools required for impactful school outreach. We will explore interactive workshops, role-playing, individual coaching and immersive simulations to enhance researchers’ ability to communicate complex concepts effectively, while emphasizing the importance of promoting critical thinking and scientific inquiry. In addition, we will discuss good practices for communication strategies and the significance of adapting content to groups with diverse needs and educational levels.
By sharing practical insights, and showcasing the value of collaboration, this session will provide a platform for outreach specialists, educators and researchers.
