Borrow a Researcher
A nationwide programme connecting researchers with schools across Sweden through free in-person and online visits, giving pupils an opportunity to meet a researcher and discover what research is really like.

Borrow a Researcher makes it easy for schools to invite a researcher into the classroom. Researchers from universities, research institutes, companies and other organisations across Sweden take part, representing a wide range of subjects from the natural sciences and technology to medicine, the social sciences and humanities.
During a visit, researchers talk not only about their research but also about what it means to work as a researcher, how they became interested in their field and how research is carried out in practice. The emphasis is on discussion and interaction, giving pupils opportunities to ask questions and meet the person behind the research.
Visits can take place either in person or online. This means that schools throughout Sweden can take part, including those located far from universities and research institutes. Schools can search for and book participating researchers through a digital platform according to subject area, age group, location and availability.
The format and focus of each visit are agreed between the researcher and the person making the booking. Some researchers also visit workplaces and other organisations, where discussions may focus more closely on their research and its relevance to society.
Benefits for pupils – and researchers
Borrow a Researcher gives pupils direct insight into research, the scientific process and the diversity of people and careers within research. The exchange is valuable for the researchers too. Explaining their work to new audiences gives them an opportunity to practise science communication, encounter new perspectives and reflect on their research in different ways.
Borrow a Researcher activities have long been part of ForskarFredag, Sweden’s European Researchers’ Night initiative, but have developed in recent years into a broader national programme with visits taking place twice a year.
